Monday Minute Challenge

I have once again entered into the Monday Minute Challenge on christiswrite.blogspot.com!  Here is my entry:

I laid down across the grass and clutched the stone necklace around my neck.  My mother had given it to me for my 18th birthday, only three days before she came down with the disease.  I remembered her face, smiling, in our small little cottage, even when she knew her disease was not curable.  I looked to my left, where the rose garden, her favorite place in the field, was dying.  There was no more beautiful red, not anymore, except for one small rose.  All the other flowers were sagging, as if they were mourning, too.  I picked the rose carefully off the bush and placed it on the piano, right next to my mother’s grave.  I sat down on the stool and began to play her favorite song.  A tear trickled down my face and into my dress.  She had taught me ever since I was four.  My fingers glided across the keys and I hummed to the tune.  The wind blew the sound off into the distance, but I didn’t care.  Why did she have to leave me?  Why couldn’t she of stayed with me?  I kept on playing, knowing my mother would be happy to hear me play this song, wherever she was.  Somehow, when I played this song, I felt as if she was right there next to me, like none of this ever happened.

Hope you enjoyed it!

"Am I Too Young?"

Do you ever ask yourself: "Am I too young to do something for God?".  I do, because I often feel that way.  You want to do so many things for Jesus, but you can't because you must be an adult to fulfill your calling.  I struggle with this often, for I one day wish to be a missionary in a foreign country.

Here is how I look at it: Think of your childhood and teenage years as preparation for what you are being called to do.  It works the other way, too.  If you are going through a difficult time, think of it as preparation for your calling, whatever it may be.  God has a reason for everything, just let him carry you.

"Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteousness be shaken." Psalm 55:22

Top Ten Christian Songs

I don't know about any of you, but I LOVE music!  It is so encouraging to hear the lyrics set to a tune, it feels almost as if Jesus is speaking directly to you.  So, I have decided to post about the Top Ten Christian Songs (according to iTunes) :D

10. This is Amazing Grace by Phil Wickham

9. Start a Fire by Unspoken

8. Thrive by Casting Crowns

7. Hope In Front of Me by Danny Gokey

6. We Believe by Newsboys

5. Thank God I Got Her by Jonny Diaz

4. Fix My Eyes by for King & Country

3. Oceans by Hillsong United

2. Greater by Mercy Me

1. God's Not Dead by Newsboys

Now you are probably wondering what my favorite song is, and, well, that is a hard one.  There are a lot of really good songs and my answer would have probably been different if you asked me tomorrow or if you asked me yesterday.  But today, my answer is...umm...either Oceans by Hillsong United or Wanted by Dara Mclean.  Trust me, the list goes on and on :D

Monday Minute Challenges

Monday Minute Challenges is a writing prompt contest on Tessa Emily Hall's blog Christ is Write.  For the first time, I decided to enter one into the challenge/contest!  I used the picture prompt. Well, here it is:

- - - - - - - - -

I shuffled forward and halted, as I had been doing for what seemed like hours.  I squeezed my brother’s hand so tightly it made my knuckles white, we were reaching the end of the line.  The line began to move once again and my mind raced for an escape.  A man with a black suit drew closer to me and my brother, Aiden.  In this evil man’s hand was a large metal box with a black hole in one end.

“Just stay calm, Ryan, we will get ourselves out of this.” My brother whispered softly into my ear.  His voice is shaky, he is scared too.

“You two,” the man pointed straight at me and my brother, I gulped. “Single file!”  Aiden obediently dropped my hand and stepped in front of me, but I wished he hadn’t, I needed his support and comfort, though he was just as scared and surprised as I was.  The line once again inched forward and Aiden was the next teenager.

I watched in horror as Aiden’s hand reached for the machine and entered.  I heard a quiet popping noise and my brother’s sagging body shot up with attentiveness.  What did they do to him?  I turned to run away but was too late, the machine had already been slipped over my hand.  In a matter of seconds a chill ran throughout my body and I walked forward against my will.  I looked to see where Aiden went in order to follow but my legs led me in the other direction.  What is happening to me?  I was now alone.  I was now enslaved.

So, set a word goal (for example, 3000 words) and then at the end of the day, on the poll that I will put up on Saturdays, say if you reached it and what the goal was.  I will post how I did the following day, or just when I get to it.  I am also going to create a page Novel Expansion Saturday!

I may add some more ins and outs about it, but what do y'all think?  I am really excited to get started on this!  :)

Creating a Cover for Your Novel

Something I really enjoy doing when it comes to writing a novel, is creating the book cover.  It is so much fun messing with all different types of photos, drawing, fonts, and colors.  But when your novel is really good, it is often difficult to create a cover that really explains your novel well.  I think most everybody has heard the phrase, "Don't judge a book by it's cover", but to tell you the truth, I do.  I am sure a lot of people do.  So you want to make sure that you cover is the absolute best it can possibly so it catches the reader's eye.

I have messed with many different cover options for Galaxy Connectors, but still haven't found a perfect match.  Depending on how far you are into your novel, sometimes you don't have a good idea of exactly how your novel will go and end (whether you plan much or not).  Sometimes, you have no clue what your novel will be called.  I started out by calling mine Sci-Fi Space Story, then I thought of calling it Portals of Space.  I threw that name away, because as I added to my word count, I thought it didn't quite fit the plot.  After a few weeks of thorough brainstorming and thinking, I came up with Galaxy Connectors.  The cover on the My Writing page is temporary, for now.  It is still not the final name for my WIP, but I am so far set on the title.  Occasionally, it is best to brainstorm for your title after the book is complete, especially if you are a very lite planner.

The fun part of creating your cover is arranging all the images or drawing, and playing with the fonts for the title.  Finding the right picture or drawing can be difficult, but in this post, I will give you some ideas.

If you are like me, you already have the perfect picture in your head of how the cover will look.  But if you are once again like me, it almost never turns out as good as planned.  If you do have that image in your mind, the best way to get it onto your cover is to take the picture yourself.  Do a photo shoot, you can illustrate your own picture the exact way you want it.  Or if you think a drawing would fit your story better, and you or someone you know is an artist, draw the front cover just the way you want it.

When working to find the perfect font, it can be quite frustrating.  You might have to look through all the fonts several times before you find the right one.  But also, the genre can help narrow down the fonts that would look good on your cover.  For example, if it is a romance novel, a type of cursive might look pretty.  If you spend enough time, you will find the font which fits your story best.

Remember, mess around with it until you until you can't bare to change anything, don't settle for a compromise!  Keep being creative...

"Five Enchanted Roses" Contest

Hi Writers!  So, I wanted to share this amazing contest by Rooglewood Press.  If you read and enjoyed Five Glass Slippers, you have a chance to enter to be one of the authors of this book.  Click HERE for more details on the contest.  Your story should be between 5,000 and 20,000 words and you have pretty much the rest of 2014 to work on it!  I am so excited for it to come out next year and I would be even more excited if you were on of the authors.  I may enter in, but I am still in the planning stage and not sure if it will turn out good.

Keep on drawing and writing everyone!

Update on Galaxy Connectors

First of all, I apologize for not posting in a while.  I have been super busy getting prepared for the school year that I haven't had any time to work on my blog.

So, Galaxy Connectors is going great and my current word count is 12344!  I am so excited to add more to my count and finish my novel by the end of 2014.  Camp NaNoWriMo went great and I was just 2000 words under my goal, but that is okay.  I missed the first week because of my  vacation to the Grand Canyon.  The week long word war on Go Teen Writers helped me out too!  I am also going to post another snippet within the next week!  Good luck and keep drawing and writing... :D
